Socceroos lose Holman

Socceroos lose Holman

08/08/2011 08:55:23 PM

Brett Holman has been ruled out of the Socceroos squad that will face Wales on Thursday morning, paving the way for the potential debut of Adam Sarota.

Holman, 27, strained a groin muscle when playing for his club side, AZ Alkmaar, on Sunday.

Holman suffered the injury in the club's 3-1 win against PSV Eindhoven and he has remained in Alkmaar for treatment.

His injury has seen the inclusion of FC Utrecht midfielder, Sarota, in Socceroos manager Holger Osieck's 18-man squad.

Sarota was selected in Osieck's squad for March's 2-1 friendly win against Germany earlier this year but is yet to make an appearance at national team level.

He has represented the Young Socceroos on two occasions and will link up with clubmate Michael Zullo in the squad as preparation for the Cardiff City Stadium friendly continue.

Sarota hinted at his inclusion on social networking website, Twitter, on Monday morning.

"Just got an interesting phone call.. looks like I will be joining my friend zulls in Wales :)," Sarota posted.

Socceroos squad:
Mark Schwarzer (Fulham), Adam Federici (Reading), Luke DeVere (Gyeongnam FC), Lucas Neill (uncontracted), Matthew Spiranovic (Urawa Red Diamonds), Luke Wilkshire (Dinamo Moscow), Rhys Williams (Middlesbrough), Michael Zullo (FC Utrecht), Tim Cahill (Everton), Brett Emerton (Blackburn Rovers), Mile Jedinak (Crystal Palace), Neil Kilkenny (Bristol City), Matt McKay (Brisbane Roar), James Troisi (Kayserispor), Carl Valeri (Sassuolo), Adam Sarota (FC Utrecht), Robbie Kruse (Fortuna Dusseldorf), Scott McDonald (Middlesbrough)
