Middlesbrough nab top spot

Middlesbrough provisionally moved to the top of the Championship table following a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday.

Goals from Justin Hoyte, Ishmael Miller and Lukas Jutkiewicz sealed the result at the Riverside Stadium, while Gary Madine found the net for visitors.

Middlesbrough are two points clear on top of the table, though second-placed Crystal Palace have a game in hand to be played against struggling Peterborough United on Saturday.

Tony Mowbray's men took the lead after 13 minutes when Hoyte beat Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland with a classy chip from the edge of the area.

Wednesday levelled proceedings through Madine in the 49th minute, but failed to salvage a point with Miller scoring on the hour mark and Jutkiewicz making sure of the win 16 minutes later.

Middlesbrough are undefeated in their past eight matches, while Wednesday remain near the relegation zone in 20th place.
