Lavicka players' choice

Players: Lavicka the best

03/09/2010 08:35:12 AM

Sydney FC's Vitezslav Lavicka has been named the coach of the season by the Professional Footballers Australia on Tuesday, just 13 months after taking up his post with the Sky Blues.

In what is his first individual accolade of his brief A-League career, Lavicka polled 66 votes - well clear of second-placed Wellington Phoenix boss Ricki Herbert (30) and third-placed Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick (29) who was adjudged the A-League Coach of the Year.

Lavicka guided the Sky Blues to the 2009/10 Premiers' Plate which was their first piece of silverware since they were crowned A-League champions in the inaugural season four years ago.

And while Sydney FC lost the major semi-final to Melbourne on the weekend, it will still be gunning for a grand final spot this weekend when it hosts Wellington in the preliminary final.

Lavicka expressed his delight on receiving the award.

"The fact that this award is voted on by A-League players makes it something that is very special for me," Lavicka said.

"The respect that they have shown by voting for me is something that I value greatly."

"I have enjoyed coaching in Australia and would like to thank everyone for the way that they have responded to my style this season."
