A late double has helped Mexico to a 3-1 win over Venezuela in a friendly on Wednesday (local time), while the United States edged Panama.
After being frustrated for most of their encounter at Reliant Stadium in Houston, goals from Rafael Marquez and Oribe Peralta in the dying minutes helped Mexico to their win.
Venezuela had taken a surprise lead in the 51st minute thanks to Edgar Perez Greco's well-executed diving header.
But their advantage lasted only 17 minutes as Carlos Salcido struck a powerful 25-yard drive to put Mexico on level terms.
Just as the encounter looked headed for a draw, Mexico netted twice in as many minutes.
Forward Marco Fabian's shot was parried by Jose Leonardo Morales, and Marquez was on hand to tap in the rebound on 88 minutes.
Peralta sealed the win a minute later, striking from just outside the area to send the pro-Mexico crowd into raptures.
Elsewhere, a ninth-minute goal from Graham Zusi helped the United States to a 1-0 win at Panama.
Panama, who recorded a first-ever win over the United States in the group stages of the 2011 Gold Cup, failed to repeat the trick in the friendly.
Zusi's close-range goal decided the encounter, despite the US finishing with 10 men after Geoff Cameron was red-carded in the 52nd minute.
It was Dallas defender Zach Loyd who set up what proved to be the winner, with the full-back's cross taking a deflection before falling to Zusi at the back post.
Sporting Kansas City midfielder Zusi blasted in, and his side held on despite Cameron being sent off after referee Francisco Chacon felt the defender had denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity by bringing down Blas Perez.
