German midfielder Sami Khedira has left his Bundesliga club Stuttgart to join Spanish giant Real Madrid, subject to a medical.
Khedira's impressive performances at the 2010 FIFA World Cup for Germany only intensified Real's interest in the midfielder, who is set to complete the move on an undisclosed fee.
Stuttgart was keen to keep Khedira but the fact his contract ran out in 12 months meant it needed to cash in or risk losing him for free.
"In the end, everything went very quickly and those responsible for Stuttgart and Real Madrid agreed a switch for midfielder Sami Khedira," read a statement on Stuttgart's official website.
"As soon as the German international has completed the sports physical examination, he will put his signature on the contract."
The 23-year-old's eye-catching performances in South Africa also attracted the interest of Chelsea but new Real boss Jose Mourinho beat them to the chase.
Mourinho reportedly viewed Real as lacking in bite in midfield.
Stuttgart's sporting director Fredi Bobic wished Khedira all the best: "We wish him great success with his new challenge in Madrid."
It is unknown whether he will join his new team-mates in Los Angeles on their American tour.
