Heart notch first win

Heart notch first win

09/04/2010 08:21:05 AM

Melbourne Heart have secured their first-ever Hyundai A-League victory, with emerging star Nick Kalmar scoring the decisive goal in the 1-0 win over North Queensland Fury at AAMI Park.

After having their first win snatched from them in cruel circumstances against Perth last week, this time the luck fell for the league's newest club as they took an 11th-minute lead through the impressive Kalmar and then weathered a storm both of the meteorological and the North Queensland variety to hold on.

In driving rain, the visitors peppered the goal in search of an equaliser for the final 80 minutes of the game, but another sublime performance from Clint Bolton did the job.

He produced a string of world class saves to deny the Fury. The best of them came midway through the second half when Gareth Edds hit a stinging volley, which Bolton turned away.

Heart's players burst into celebration along with the 4184-strong crowd at the end of the match having waited five weeks to record their first win. They now move to mid-table with five points and face Central Coast next week.

The Fury side produced another 90 minutes of entertaining football, but like last week, there was no reward. They are also on five points and have the bye next week to reflect on a roller-coaster first five weeks of the season.

Melbourne Heart: 1 (Kalmar 11)
North Queensland Fury: 0
Crowd: 4184
