Experienced Melbourne Heart goalkeeper Clint Bolton has described the impending departure of coach John van 't Schip as a massive loss to a club which has been defined by the Dutchman.

John van 't Schip played for 11 seasons at Dutch giant Ajax, during which time they won the league four times, as well as a Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Cup. He then played four seasons at Genoa. He also made 41 appearances for the Dutch national team between 1986 and 1995. After retiring as a player, van 't Schip became a youth coach for Ajax and manager for FC Twente. From August 2004 he assisted Marco van Basten in coaching the Dutch national team, until Van Basten left the position of head coach following Euro 2008. Van 't Schip, then followed Van Basten to Ajax becoming assistant coach for the 2008–09 season. Following van Basten's resignation in May 2009, van 't Schip was named as the Interim Head Coach of AFC Ajax and coached the club until the end of the season.
