Dutchman Rini Coolen became Adelaide United's third A-League coach after taking the reigns from Aurelio Vidmar on July 5, 2010. In the 2009-10 season Vidmar guided the side through a tumultuous period where the Reds finished last on the A-League ladder for the first time. Vidmar left at the start of June to take up a role as a Socceroos assistant coach, ending his three year tenure at Adelaide and paving the way for Coolen. A former defender for the likes of Heracles Almelo, De Graafschap and AZ Alkmaar, Coolen agreed terms with Adelaide despite strong support for Assistant Coach, Phil Stubbins, fuelling speculation of a revolt. Coolen brings with him a strong managerial background having had stints at Heracles Almelo, FC Twente and RBC Roosendahl and will look to return Adelaide to the type of form that saw it finish Runners-up in the 2006-07 and 2008-09 A-League seasons as well as the 2008 Asian Champions League. Coolen will be aided for the 2010-11 campaign by a couple of key signings in proven goalscore Sergio van Dijk, who signed a three-year deal in March, as well as former Central Coast defender Nigel Boogard, who agreed terms with the Reds back in November, 2009.
