A comprehensive 44-32 win over the Central Pulse secured a home semifinal for the Adelaide Thunderbirds after Monday's ANZ Championship netball match in Napier.
It wasn't all plain sailing for the Thunderbirds, who were given a solid workout by the plucky Pulse during the first half, but the visitors took control with a dominating third quarter.
The Thunderbirds move on to meet the Melbourne Vixens in the sudden-death semifinal in Adelaide at the weekend while the Pulse's season ended on a familiar winless note.
The poor third quarter summed up the Pulse's season. Competitive for patches, they have not been able to string together one consistent 60-minute effort.
There was none of the expected fireworks from the formidable Thunderbirds line-up as both teams made patient and steady starts.
In a spirited opening, the home team was certainly not over-awed as it level-pegged through the first stanza against one of the title-contenders.
The pacey Thunderbirds transferred through court with ease but were often held up heading into the circle where Pulse defenders Sonia Mkoloma and Kahurangi Waititi did some excellent spoiling work to deny scoring opportunities.
The visitors threatened often enough to pull away but patches of inconsistency and a determined response from the Pulse had the visitors ahead by just the one to lead 11-10 at the first break.
The switch of the dynamic Mo'onia Gerrard from wing defence to goal defence on the resumption made life extremely frustrating for the shorter Pulse shooters. The home team had huge trouble penetrating their circle where the ever-alert Gerrard snapped up a string of extra ball.
Shooters Kate Beveridge and the super-consistent Natalie Medhurst made the Pulse pay with some quality shooting.
However, the Thunderbirds failed to make the best use of their opportunities in a quarter where turnovers featured highly. Lack of purpose on attack, basic errors and some gritty defensive work from the Pulse kept the home team in the hunt.
Having just the one more attempt during the first half, the Thunderbirds greater accuracy propelled them to a 22-17 halftime lead.
Showing a greater urgency in the second half on the back of a crisper delivery on attack, the Thunderbirds ominously wound up the momentum.
Little went right for the Pulse in a faltering display as Geva Mentor and Gerrard kept the Pulse scoreless for the first seven minutes of the third quarter.
It was a comprehensive quarter from the Thunderbirds throughout the court as stifling defence, speed through the midcourt and accurate shooting left the Pulse trailing in their wake.
Outscoring the Pulse 13 goals to four, the Thunderbirds gave a timely showing of their credentials to hit three-quarter time 35-21 ahead.
The match closed out in scrappy fashion in a contest where both defence lines played strongly. Waititi had an impressive outing for the Pulse along with Cushla Lichtwark, who has been an industrious toiler all season.
For the Thunderbirds, none was better than the abrasive Gerrard.
