Powell pips Bolt in Stockholm

Powell pips Bolt in Stockholm

23/07/2008 8:03 AM

Asafa Powell secured a narrow win over new world record holder Usain Bolt as the Jamaican pair claimed a one-two in the 100m at the IAAF Super Grand Prix meeting in Stockholm.

Powell took full advantage of Bolt's poor start to clinch a thrilling win in 9.88 seconds, one hundredth of a second clear of his rival, with Jaysuma Ndure of Norway third in 10.06.

It was as billed as the Jamaican pair's first meaningful clash since Bolt succeeded his compatriot as world record holder, clocking 9.72 seconds in New York at the end of May.

There was plenty of tension in the 1912 Olympic Stadium and it became more intense when Portugal's Olympic silver medallist Francis Obikwelu false-started.

But Powell powered to the front of the field when they started and held on in the final 20 metres as Bolt closed in.

"I was really happy with the race," said Bolt, winner of the same DN Galan event two years ago when he set a stadium record of 9.86 seconds.

"My start was quick and fast and the speed stayed with me through to the finish."

Powell will aim to give world champion Tyson Gay a taste of the same medicine in Friday's Aviva London Grand Prix.

Had Powell on Tuesday night with a stadium record, he would have received a one carat gold diamond. Abubaker Kaki, Dayron Robles, Meseret Defar and Yelena Isinbayeva were rewarded in such a manner after their performances.

Kaki won the 1,000m on his debut over the distance with a powerful front-running display which carried him to victory in two minutes 13.93 seconds

Robles continued his purple patch in the 110m hurdles this summer when winning in a magnificent 12.91 seconds, just 0.03 slower than his six-week-old world record.

Defar, running against the clock, brought the 22,000 capacity crowd to their feet when she narrowly missed fellow Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibabe's 5,000m world record with the second fastest ever time of 14:12.88.

Britain's Jo Pavey, whose priority will be the 10,000m at the Olympics - although she is also entered for the 5,000m in Beijing - finished third.

Newly-crowned UK high jump champion Tom Parson cleared 2.24 metres for fifth place, behind Sweden's Olympic champion Stefan Holm who won with 2.30 metres.

Sanya Richards showed fellow American Allyson Felix a clean pair of heels to win the 400m in 50.38 seconds - Felix could only finish third, behind Jamaican Novlene Williams.

"I was second last year so I am very happy to win today," said Olympic gold medal favourite Richards.

Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner won the men's 400m for a fourth successive year in Stockholm with a time of 44.29 seconds.
