Magic using the art of deception

Magic using the art of deception

The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic are likely to continue their surprise tactics as they head into Monday's inaugural ANZ Championship final.

Magic coach Noeline Taurua has kept everyone guessing, including her own players, about her line-ups in recent weeks, especially the make-up of her front court.

Irene van Dyk and Maria Tutaia have been swapped around at goal shoot and goal attack while Laura Langman was pushed forward into wing attack in last week's sudden-death final win over the Adelaide Thunderbirds.

That guessing game is expected to continue into the final against the NSW Swifts in Sydney, where the Magic are looked to atone for a last-gasp semi-final lost that denied them home court advantage in the showpiece event.

"You're never quite sure what's going to happen…it's exciting, it's new and it keeps the team on its toes," van Dyk said.

"Noels has got so many tricks up her sleeve now and it's just a matter of what she's going to pull out for the final.

"My initial thought was that when I go out of my half of the circle I cause havoc so I didn't think it was a good idea.

"But then I thought, Noeline was the queen of that position once [a Silver Fern during the 1990s] and she has the confidence in me to do something there, so I thought if she has confidence in me, I should just go out there and do my job.

"She coaches with flair and follows her gut instinct which at times even has the players a little stunned.''

One poor quarter against the Swifts meant the Magic had to front again a week later with the prospect of being tipped out of the competition by the Thunderbirds.

But they kept the New Zealand flag flying with a determined victory and feel the extra match may have been more beneficial than the week off enjoyed by NSW - a team the Magic has failed to conquer twice this season.

"We go into this game knowing we haven't won any games against them this season so it's going to make us hungry," van Dyk said.

"Playing that game against the Thunderbirds where we were pushed to the limit has made us stronger. It was a great preparation.''
