Bolt not Powell's only worry

Bolt not Powell's only worry

22/07/2008 6:20 AM

Asafa Powell has stressed his clash with Usain Bolt in Tuesday's DN Galan Super Grand Prix in Sweden is not just about the two of them.

Powell's head to head with his younger Jamaican rival will undoubtedly be the highlight of the sell-out meeting in Stockholm.

The pair have developed a great rivalry with Bolt having recently lowered Powell's 100 metres world record by two hundredths of a second to 9.72 seconds.

But Powell points out that 10 other sub 10-second sprinters have entered the event and and the heats will be anything but straightforward.

"It's a very strong field," said Powell, who posted a stadium record of 9.86s at the 1912 Olympic venue two years ago.

"All the other guys will want to run very fast and so we are going to have to think about what we have to do to run a faster race."

Powell insists he suffered few effects after pulling up with cramp at the Rome Golden League meeting on July 11, and was back in full training three days later.

The Commonwealth champion was not fully fit when he last met Bolt at the Jamaican Championships last month as he had only just recovered from a shoulder injury.

"I'll do my best and Usain hasn't really run a proper race [against me] yet and so I hope to go out and put on a good show," said Powell.

Attacking the world record has not raised its head, but with conditions expected to be perfect, his stadium record could well be threatened. A one-carat diamond valued at £20,000 awaits the winner if he achieves that feat.

"We'll have to wait until tomorrow, check the weather and see how fast it is possible to run," said Powell, very eager to add another diamond to his personal collection.

Bolt, who became almost an overnight celebrity after speeding to his world record in New York in May, is looking forward to the meeting as he sharpens up for the Beijing Olympics.

The 21-year-old, with four very fast sub-10sec times under his belt this summer and wins over Tyson Gay and Powell to his credit, is also convinced the strength of the meeting ensures a fast race.

"I think anybody who wins tomorrow will definitely get the stadium record," said Bolt. "If the weather is good there's going to be a fast time.

"I'm just going out there to compete and run my best."

Playing down a world record attempt, Bolt added: "When I go out to race, I don't think about the world record.

"What my coach said is, 'Go there and do your best'."

The pair of Caribbean aces may be playing down a world record bid, but Yelena Isinbayeva feels she is ready to improve the world pole vault mark she achieved at the Rome meeting with a height of 5.02metres.

The Olympic champion has set herself a target of beating the 35 world records Sergey Bubka achieved in his 10-year domination of the men's event from 1984.

"My goal is to set 36 and now I need only another 14," said the 25-year-old Russian, who is likely to claim another diamond after vaulting 4.79m at the 2005 meeting.

Commonwealth silver medalist Jo Pavey is competing over 5000m where she faces Olympic title holder Meseret Defar, while Tom Parsons takes on a world-class high jump field.

Parsons clinched his Team GB place for Beijing when winning the UK trial with a personal best and Games qualifying standard height of 2.30m in Birmingham.

Now before setting off for China he has the opportunity to rub shoulders with his more experienced rivals including the host nation's defending Olympic champion Stefan Holm.
