I won't mind if Manly win the 2008 premiership.
There. I've said it. And it wasn't so painful.
Before the Sea Eagles haters stone the Sportal office in retribution for such a blasphemous comment, let me assure you I make an exception for this year only.
And the reason is one Steven 'Beaver' Menzies.
Who could begrudge him going out a winner?
The NRL player it's impossible to hate.
How could you?
It'd be like sledging Richie Cunningham or trash talking Brand Power's Sally Williams.
Menzies gives rugby league a good name.
It's blokes like him who give you hope for the code after the SBWs, Birds and Co have crapped on it from a great height.
He's the bloke who you'd happily let your daughter go out with – as long as he had a beer with you first.
For 16 years Menzies has played the game hard and fair without a skerrick of drama or dirt.
His name has never been used in the same sentence as 'nightclub incident' or 'assault charges pending'.
I've seen him out at night and, even with a few beers under his belt, oblige every single punter who wanted to shake his hand, slap him on the back or dribble a few words in his ear.
Menzies didn't pretend league players had it tough.
He knew they enjoyed a privileged life and were well paid for it.
He could have made more money by switching clubs but Menzies playing for another club would be like transplanting Manly Beach onto the Nepean River.
He missed out on the blond surfie looks but Beaver is more northern beaches than a Narrabeen left-hander or Sunday beers at the Newport Arms.
The kid from Harbord United who grew up only dreaming in maroon and white.
If he couldn't play for the Sea Eagles, Beaver wasn't interested.
It was Manly or bust.
These days the majority of young players know more about France than the club down the road.
Asked if he felt like the King of Brookvale after his farewell premiership match on Monday night, a typically humble Menzies dismissed the tag and instead thanked the 15,000 fans for giving up a night to salute him.
So I'll say it again. If it means Steve Menzies going out a winner, then let Manly win the comp this year.
If you still want to stone the joint, make it a Friday or Saturday when I'm not in.
