Roy Higgins Medal struck

Roy Higgins Medal struck

16/07/2008 11:07:36 AM

The jockey who rides the most winners during the three-day Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival will be awarded the Roy Higgins Medal.

The award will be presented to the jockey who rides the most winners at Caulfield's three main meetings in the spring, with a count back to be used if two jockeys are tied for the most wins at the completion of the three days.

And the progressive leader of the award will wear a leader's yellow armband during the three days of racing, similar to the yellow jersey for the leading rider at the Tour De France.

Victorian Jockeys' Association chief executive Des O'Keeffe said the new award was a great initiative and will be cherished by the winning jockey.

"It would be an honour for any jockey to win the medal named after one of Australia's greatest jockeys," he said.

"And every jockey would be proud to wear the leader's yellow armband at some stage of the Caulfield carnival."

The three days of racing that will determine the winner are Caulfield Guineas day on Saturday October 13, Thousand Guineas day on Wednesday October 17 and Caulfield Cup day on Saturday October 20.
