Racegoers will know on Thursday morning whether they will see a rematch between glamour four-year-olds Weekend Hussler and Light Fantastic in Saturday's G2 Makybe Diva Stakes.
That is when trainer Ross McDonald will decide whether Weekend Hussler will be a surprise starter for the $505,000 race at Flemington.
The Makybe Diva Stakes had not been on Weekend Hussler's original program but the way the spring's weight-for-age events has been scheduled meant the superstar galloper would have had to run twice in a week some time during his campaign.
And McDonald felt sooner rather than later would be better.
"But the way the races are programmed you've got to double up somewhere along the line," McDonald told Sportal.
"The ideal thing would be if you could have one every two weeks but the way the races are programmed it doesn't work that way."
"I think it's easier for him to step up than have a fortnight to go to the 1800 than wait two weeks and run in a mile and the week after you have to butter him up to 1800."
Originally, Weekend Hussler was to run in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes on September 13 at Moonee Valley, giving him just one week, rather than two under the new plan, before he stepped beyond the mile for the first time in the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.
Now, Weekend Hussler will have his final tune-up for the Caulfield Cup seven days prior in the Yalumba Stakes (2000m) on October 11.
The drawback from Weekend Hussler's revised program is he will enter the Cox Plate, should McDonald choose to head that way, without having a race start at Moonee Valley.
To counter that, McDonald will give Weekend Hussler a track gallop at the Valley in between the Makybe Diva and Underwood Stakes.
"We might go out and work him out there," he said. "We'll just see what happens."
