As has been his wont for the past 12 months, champion three-year-old Weekend Hussler has won by the length of the straight to be crowned the Australian Racehorse of the Year.
The six-time Group 1 winner earned a staggering 82 percent of the votes cast by members of the racing media and officials to become the first of his age group since Octagonal in 1995-96 to claim the honour.
Weekend Hussler, who took his overall earnings to more than $2.5 million in winning the Memsie Stakes on Saturday, has been the star of the turf for the past year since his maiden win at Cranbourne almost exactly 12 months ago.
The Ross McDonald-trained colt was rated the world's equal-best miler and second-best sprinter behind Hong Kong superstar Sacred Kingdom after four consecutive Group One victories in the Ultra Tune Oakleigh Plate (1100m), the Newmarket Handicap (1200m), Randwick Guineas (1600m), George Ryder Stakes (1500m), followed by wins in the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and the Coolmore Stakes (1200m) last spring.
While Weekend Hussler dominated the three-year-old category for males, he was beaten to the champion sprinter award by Apache Cat - who won five consecutive Group One races - while last year's Cox Plate winner El Segundo claimed the champion middle-distance performer.
Melbourne Cup winner Efficient was named champion stayer and Golden Slipper winner Sebring was voted champion two-year-old.
Meanwhile, 'Cups King' Bart Cummings was elevated to Legend status in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.
The 80-year-old, who has trained 11 Melbourne Cup winners since 1965, joins Phar Lap as legends of Australian racing.
Seven racing icons were also officially inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.
Champion mares of the past Tranquil Star and Wenona Girl were joined by associate Percy Miller, trainers Bob Hoysted and David Hayes and champion jockeys Frank Dempsey and Damien Oliver.
