OM suffers surprise defeat

OM suffers surprise defeat

16/11/2008 9:18 AM

Marseille missed the chance to cut the gap on Ligue 1 leader Lyon as it slumped to a surprise 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Lorient.

The three points looked in the bag for OM when it went two goals up by the hour mark thanks to Karim Ziani's driven 10th-minute finish and Mamadou Niang's penalty.

But Lorient rose from the dead, Morgan Amalfitano beginning the fightback with a sensational volley before Fabrice Abriel and Kevin Gameiro scored in the last six minutes to earn the Brittany side victory.

OM remains four points behind Lyon, which could stretch that lead when it faces Bordeaux on Sunday.

Toulouse climbed to third as two first half-goals from Andre Pierre Gignac (7 and 19) earned Tefece a 2-0 victory over Grenoble.

Lille saw off 10-man St Etienne 3-0 to retain fifth spot in the table.

Eden Hazard (25) and Ludovic Obraniak (35) gave the hosts a cushion at the interval while St Etienne's task was made even harder by the dismissal of Blaise Matuidi four minutes into the second half.

Robert Vittek then made sure of the points for Lille after 70 minutes.

Two goals from Guillaume Hoarau - including a late penalty - helped Paris St Germain claim a 3-1 win at Le Havre.

Ludovic Giuly also scored for the visitors with Amadou Alassane grabbing the hosts' reply.

At the other end of the table, Valenciennes failed to lift itself off the bottom as Mathieu Coutadeur's 21st-minute strike condemned it to a 1-0 defeat at Le Mans.

Sochaux is just one place above VA after it also slipped to a 1-0 home loss at the hands of Auxerre, which scored the only goal through Kevin Lejeune.

Steve Savidan celebrated his call-up to the France squad with Caen's goal in the 1-1 draw with Nancy, which pulled level in the second half when defender Florian Boucansaud put through his own net.
