Griffiths rescues Jets

02/09/2007 8:22 PM

The Newcastle Jets and Queensland Roar have fought out a dramatic 1-1 draw at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Both teams found the net in the second half, with Reinaldo's 70th-minute opener cancelled out by a Joel Griffiths free kick late in the contest.

Reinaldo's goal came when the Roar counter-attacked through Matthew McKay, who found Simon Lynch on the left. Lynch picked out an unmarked Reinaldo, who beat Ante Covic with a well-placed shot in the 70th minute.

But after Roar captain Stuart McLaren was sent off Griffiths slotted home the equaliser from a fine free kick in the dying minutes.

Queensland were without stars Danny Tiatto and Craig Moore who were sidelined through suspension, while the Newcastle crowd enjoyed some promising attacking flair from playmaker Denni.

The Jets' first opportunity came in the seventh minute when Griffiths dribbled his way to the six yard box but lost control of the ball in the face off several scrambling Roar defenders.

Both teams traded early chances, with Marcinho and Reinaldo testing out Covic with long-range efforts and Jets striker Mark Bridge sending a low drive toward Roar shot-stopper and former teammate Liam Reddy.

The home side's best chance of the half came when Joel Griffiths got to a great cross from Bridge but headed just over the bar.

McLaren was carded before the break for bringing down Jets playmaker Denni, but Matt Thompson's low free-kick didn't get past Reddy and the teams went into the break level at 0-0.

The hosts almost unlocked Queensland's defence in the 65th minute when Griffiths slipped a pass into the feet of Denni, but the Brazilian playmaker's first-time effort didn't get past Reddy.

But Queensland hit the front from a neat counter-attack after McKay intercepted a pass and burst upfield, with Reinaldo coolly slotting his shot home.

With five minutes left the Jets were given a golden chance to equalise, with McLaren sent off for a second bookable offence after Griffiths was brought down.

Griffiths then put the hosts level with a classy free kick, with a curling shot beating a diving Reddy and finding the top right corner.

Newcastle pressed for a late winner but the draw was a fair result in the end, with both sides remaining unbeaten going into round three.

Newcastle United Jets 1 (Griffiths 87)
Queensland Roar 1 (Reinaldo 70)
