Zimbabwe too strong for Canada

Zimbabwe too strong for Canada

14/10/2008 6:52 AM

Zimbabwe cruised to a crushing 109-run victory in its Twenty20 quadrangular series third-place play-off against Canada on Monday.

Chasing an unlikely 185 for victory, only two Canadians made it into double figures as it was bowled out for 75 in 19.2 overs.

Its first three batsmen contributed just four runs and from then on the writing was on the wall.

Zimbabwe made 5-184 from its 20 overs, helped in no small part by a second-wicket partnership of 89 between opener Hamilton Masakadza and Chamu Chibhabha.

The Africans needed a bowl-off to beat Canada in their game on Saturday and looked like they might be in trouble again when Cephas Zhuwawo went for a duck.

But Masakadza (79 off 52) and Chibhabha (40 off 35) asserted their authority and laid the foundations for a comfortable victory, despite two wickets from Balaji Rao late on.

Canada then slumped to 3-10 as Ashif Mulla, Rizwan Cheema (both two off eight) and Sandeep Jyoti (none from 12) and were dismissed in quick succession.

Only AM Samad (29 off 23) offered any real resistence, while Ray Price (2-6 off four overs) and Prosper Utseya (3-26 off four) were the pick of the Zimbabwe bowlers. Tatenda Taibu claimed three stumpings.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan were set to contest the final later on Monday.
