Warne comeback?

Warne open to comeback

09/10/2008 4:40 AM

Shane Warne would consider coming out of retirement if he was asked to join up with the Australian team.

The news comes with Australia's slow bowling stocks at its lowest point for some time.

Australia starts the first of the four-Test series against India in Bangalore on Thursday with the selectors to decide which of uncapped duo Jason Krejza and Cameron White they will take into the match.

It is an unfamiliar situation for the world champion Aussies who have seen Warne, arguably the game's greatest ever bowler, and fellow wrist spinners Stuart MacGill and Brad Hogg retire in the past 18 months.

Warne announced his retirement following Australia's 5-0 whitewash victory over England last year, having taken a then world-record 708 Test wickets - a feat that has since been surpassed by Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan.

"If the call comes I will consider it," Warne said.

"I'm fit enough. I'm probably fitter than I have ever been at the moment."

Warne also indicated he thought he would have a better chance of success than the current crop of Australian spinners during the upcoming series against India.

"With India's Fab Four - Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly - coming to the end of their careers they would be losing confidence and less likely to try and dominate a top quality spinner," he said.

It is not the first time that Warne has flagged the possibility of coming out of retirement.

In May, the 39-year-old said he would consider returning if then first-choice spinner Stuart MacGill 'fell over and broke his leg, and there were no other spinners around'.

MacGill then retired during Australians' tour of West Indies, leaving Australia's spin stocks in a poor state, but talk of Warne's return was soon rebuffed by both Cricket Australia and the player himself who said he was 'happily retired'.

And while Warne admits he is still happy to have hung up his boots he revealed he has been bowling recently and 'landing them pretty well'.
