Tigers sting Redbacks

Tigers sting Redbacks

Tasmania has bowled out South Australia for 182 after making 8-286 to win its opening home Ford Ranger Cup match of the season by 104 runs at Bellerive Oval.

After being sent into bat, the Tigers amassed its total on the back of terrific half-centuries by Daniel Marsh, George Bailey and Travis Birt, and then South Australia never looked likely of getting near it.

Tasmania did slip to 3-73 early in its innings, but a 117-run stand between Marsh and Bailey steadied the ship. Marsh made 52, Bailey 79 and Birt remained 56 not out as the Tigers enjoyed returning home as defending Ford Ranger Cup champions.

Brett Geeves was the star with the ball taking 3-25 from 10 overs as Tasmania cruised to victory. Only Michael Klinger showed any real fight with the bat making 59, while Cameron Borgas chipped in with 31 and Daniel Christian batted well late despite getting injured when bowling to make 42.

It was always going to be a tough run chase for the Redbacks and it became virtually impossible when they fell 3-45 with Daniel Harris (six), Callum Ferguson (10) and Younus Khan (three) falling cheaply to Ben Hilfenhaus, Mark Divin and Brendan Drew respectively.

Klinger was in doubt for the match due to injury but looked terrific in his 59 with four fours and a six until Geeves got rid of the ex-Victorian and all but ended any hope of a Redbacks revival.

Captain Graham Manou was next to fall for two, Aaron O'Brien for 12, Cleary for 12 and Shaun Tait for two to leave South Australia 9-152. Only some good late hitting from Christian took the total up to 182.

Bailey top-scored in Tasmania's innings with 79, including seven fours and two sixes and Marsh hit 52 with three boundaries but it was Birt that set Bellerive alight.

Batting further down the order than his customary three spot, Birt came in with the Tigers' innings well set at 4-190 and he took a liking to the Redbacks bowling. He took just 37 balls to make his 56.

Tait struggled early with the ball for South Australia but hit back late in the innings to claim the wickets of Geeves, Divin and Drew to finish with 3-52 from 10 overs.

Allan Wise copped some treatment but also claimed three wickets to finish with 3-56 with Cleary taking 2-61 from 10.

Michael Dighton and Tim Paine looked solid in the opening 10 overs and saw off Tait, but the aggressive Dighton was out for 22 when caught by Borgas off the bowling of Wise.

Paine then joined him back in the pavilion three overs later for 29 when caught by Harris off Cleary.

Dane Anderson hit two fours and a six on his way to 14 but his aggression proved his downfall when he became Wise's second victim to leave the Tigers at 3-73.

Bailey and Marsh steadied the ship with a tremendous partnership to set up the Tigers innings. They put on 117 in quick time before Harris took a catch off Wise to dismiss Marsh for 52.

Bailey went for 79 in the 41st over with the score at 5-215 and the Tigers lower order batting ready to open their shoulders.

However, Tait made sure that Geeves (nine), Divin (three) and Drew (three) made no impact, with the last two out to in-swinging yorkers. Birt helped
