A match-saving partnership from Brett Geeves (33 not out) and Tim Paine (46 not out) has guided the Tigers out of trouble and to within 40 runs of victory at stumps on day 3 in its Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia at Bellerive Oval.
The Redbacks bowlers started off beautifully and ripped through the Tasmanian top order to leave the Tigers reeling at 6-76 after only 26 overs and still with plenty to get.
Paul George (2-44) snaffled the opening pair of Dane Anderson and Rhett Lockyer in the space of four overs before Paul Cleary (2-26) trapped Travis Birt in front for ten and then had Marsh caught behind for a second-ball duck in the same over.
Firebrand Shaun Tait (1-41) also got into the action dismissing the stubborn George Bailey who had resisted for 19 runs from 43 deliveries. Next to go was Luke Butterworth who was caught by Younis Khan off the bowling of Allen Wise for two.
The Tigers were in dire straits but the wicket brought Geeves to the crease and along with Paine they first steadied the Tasmanian innings before then steering it towards stumps score of 6/140 and the prospect of an unlikely win tomorrow.
Earlier, a five-wicket haul from paceman Ben Hilfenhaus helped Tasmania dismiss South Australia for 200 and set-up an exciting finish to the four-day encounter.
Hilfenhaus picked up the last three South Australian wickets to finish the innings with the impressive figures of 5-53 from 20.3 overs, while former Victorian Gerard Denton chipped in with 2-30 from 10 overs.
The Redbacks resumed at 3-92 and lost four wickets in an entertaining opening session, before Hilfenhaus took three scalps shortly after the luncheon break.
Callum Ferguson and Daniel Harris made an enterprising start to the day, with the duo adding 21 runs to the overnight score before Hilfenhaus made the important breakthrough.
Hilfenhaus had Ferguson caught at first slip by Dan Marsh for a well compiled 30 and in his next over the paceman bowled Harris for 47 to leave the Tigers reeling at 5-120.
Denton came into the attack to replace Hilfenhaus and the move paid immediate dividends as the former Victorian trapped Aaron O'Brien plumb in front for 10 as the Tigers moved in for the kill.
Graham Manou and Cleary made a mini recover as the pair put on 26 runs for the seventh wicket, but Luke Butterworth dismissed Manou for 19 shortly before lunch as the Redbacks got on top.
Then Hilfenhaus got rid of Cleary, Allan Wise and George in quick succession, before South Australia fought back with four wickets prior to tea.
