Symonds in strife again

Symonds in trouble again

24/11/2008 5:18 PM

The career of Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds is again in jeopardy after more reports of off-field trouble involving the 33-year-old.

Cricket Australia has sought more information concerning allegations Symonds was involved in a physical altercation at a Brisbane pub on Sunday night - around 12 hours after the Australian team sealed a 149-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test at the Gabba.

It is believed Symonds was drinking with several members of the Australian rugby league team when the fight occurred between Symonds and a member of the public.

Cricket Australia is yet to comment on the incident but if Symonds is found to be at fault it could be the end of his colourful career.

His latest indiscretion comes just as Symonds had been recalled to the team after being banished from national duty after electing to go fishing in Darwin ahead of a team meeting before a one day international during Bangladesh's winter tour of Australia.
Symonds was chosen for the first Test despite poor form in domestic cricket but made little impression in making just 26 and 20 and failing to take a wicket.

Despite that he has been retained in the Australian team for the second Test, starting in Adelaide on Friday, at the expense of fellow all-rounder Shane Watson.

Watson also struggled in Brisbane but performed well in place of Symonds on the recent Test tour of India.

Symonds, who also once famously turned up drunk for a one day international against Bangladesh during the 2005 Ashes' tour, has been told by CA management that he is on his last chance and any more misdemeanours could result in the end of his international career.

The 33-year-old, when recalled to the team for the first Test, admitted himself that he could not afford any more slip-ups after also admitting recently that alcohol had contributed to his poor off-field behaviour in recent years.

It is unknown whether Symonds instigated this latest incident but he may win a reprieve if he is found to have been provoked but questions will be asked as to why he put himself in yet another potentially inflammable situation by being out drinking just as he had finally being recalled to the national team.
