Siddle still cautious

Siddle still cautious

Victorian bowler Peter Siddle thinks he's unlikely to make Australia's starting XI for the second Test in Adelaide beginning on Friday.

The paceman said he was thrilled to have been called up to the national squad at the expense of all-rounder Shane Watson, but felt he was a long shot of getting a second Test match under his belt after making his debut in the second Test loss to India in Mohali.

But Siddle, currently playing for Victoria in the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia, was philosophical about what the future held for his national prospects.

"We got to lunch this afternoon (Sunday) and Boony (Australian selector David Boon) came in and gave me the good news," Siddle said.

"So it's always good, to get back in there and hopefully if I get a game, I get a game and if not, it's just good to be back in the squad."

"You still don't know what's going to happen the night before the game or in the lead-up to the match, so you've always got to be prepared to play."

The Australians head to Adelaide on a high after recovering from a disastrous opening day of the first Test in Brisbane to secure a 149-run win over the Black Caps.

Watson could only manage scores of one and five in his innings, along with figures of 2-54.

Despite not being the only Australian batsman to fail against the Kiwis, he lost his place to Siddle, although it seems likely Tasmanian spinner Jason Krejza, the 12th man in Brisbane, will be selected in the starting XI as Adelaide's pitch will favour spin.

Siddle is more than aware of this and is happy simply to just be around his Australian team-mates, hoping this might eventually lead to a berth in the touring party for next year's Ashes series.

"Obviously the older blokes are good to be around, Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting, Brett Lee, they're all good and experienced players to play with," he said.

"They've been really good to me and sort of gave me that knowledge of the game and new ideas and all that sort of stuff to go about your own game."

"(And) if the opportunity comes up, I would be grateful for it, an Ashes tour."

"Everyone wants to be on one of those, but I've just got to work hard from now to then and stay fit and keep going well."

"There's still a lot of cricket to be played in between then ... there's a lot left in the summer before that comes about."
