Queensland trio the focus

27/11/2008 3:25 PM

All eyes will be on a trio of Queenslanders - one of whom has since moved states to New South Wales - when the second Test against New Zealand gets underway in Adelaide on Friday.

For varying reasons opener Matthew Hayden, all-rounder Andrew Symonds and off-spinner Nathan Hauritz will be the focus of attention at the Adelaide Oval.

For Hayden the Test marks the big opener becoming the 11th Australian in the game's history to reach the prestigious mark of 100 Test appearances and he is certainly joining exalted company with the other 10 being in order of Tests played: Steve Waugh, Allan Border, Shane Warne, Mark Waugh, Glenn McGrath, current skipper Ricky Ponting, Ian Healy, David Boon, Justin Langer and Mark Taylor.

In contrast Hauritz, who moved to New South Wales in 2006/07 in a bid to revive his international career, may play just his second Test four years after his only previous appearance on Australia's 2004 tour of India.

And Symonds will be desperate to get back to what he does best - scoring runs, taking wickets and pulling off freakish catches and again showing why he is arguably the country's most exciting cricketer - after a difficult week in which his off-field behaviour has again come into focus.

The trio have combined to add some spark to the series after Australia ensured it would retain the Trans-Tasman trophy by beating New Zealand by 149 runs in the first Test at the Gabba.

However, that match was far closer and far more exciting than the final margin suggests after Australia was bowled out for just 214 and 268 in its respective innings only to do even more damage with the ball as the Kiwis managed just 156 and 177 in reply.

For Australia's critics, following the recent 2-0 loss in India, the closer-than-expected first Test victory was supposedly further proof that the team was in decline.

But a win is still a win and Australia can expect far more batsman-friendly conditions in Adelaide compared to the bowler-friendly conditions the weather-affected Brisbane Test was played under.

And with that in mind who would bet against 37-year-old Hayden celebrating his milestone Test by recapturing his best form.

Hayden made just eight and a first-ball duck in Brisbane and has scored just two half-centuries and no hundreds in his past 10 Test innings - which is well below the lofty standards he has set throughout his long career.

For Hauritz, who has been in and out of the New South Wales team, he may get the chance to revive his international career at a time he least expected it, following the ankle injury sustained by Tasmanian Jason Krezja.

The off-spinner has been preferred to New South Wales team-mate Beau Casson, who made his Test debut in the West Indies earlier this year, and Victorian all-rounder Cameron White, who played on the recent Indian tour.

Hauritz's return comes at a time when Australia's spinning stocks aren't what they once were with Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill retired and Victorian leg-spinner Bryce McGain injured.

But the 27-year-old is a far more mature bowler now than the one which made his Test debut four years ago and should find conditions will suit at Adelaide Oval - a venue which traditionally offers turn late in the match.

As for Symonds he will be just happy the focus will return to the on-field action on Friday after he was cleared by Cricket Australia of any wrongdoing over an incident in a pub in Brisbane.
