Potential will only get NSW so far

New South Wales batsman Usman Khawaja has warned his young team-mates that the promise of what they offer in the future won't insulate them from the sack if the side continues to struggle this season.
The Baby Blues are equal bottom of the Ford Ranger Cup table and go into Friday's Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland propping up the four-day ladder.
While the team boasts some precocious talent, Khawaja admits potential has to be realised if the majority of the squad is to see out the season.
"You've always got to be careful in that regards because there's always a lot of other players chomping at the bit (to get in the team)," he said when asked if the current crop of players was the future of NSW cricket.
"There's so much talent, so you've got to be careful if you are thinking like that."
"I think everyone just needs to perform and keep performing and I think there's enough experience out there - especially with the amount of cricket everyone is playing now with a few boys coming back - that we should be stringing together wins."
"The whole 'Baby Blues' tag shouldn't be an excuse for us losing anymore."
NSW's youth brigade gained plenty from the tour match victory over New Zealand last weekend but fell back into bad old habits in the disappointing 24-run loss to Queensland in Wednesday night's Ford Ranger Cup match.
It's left the Blues' season at the crossroads heading into a critical period prior to Christmas.
"There's a lot of games coming up clustered all together, so if we can gain momentum after this game (against the Bulls) we can string together a few wins and get ourselves back up on the table," Khawaja said.
"I think the boys are up for it."
"Dougie (Bollinger) is back this week, which should be a big boost. There is a definite change in the changing rooms with Dougie there to liven us up a little."
