Rogge stands by Bolt criticism

Rogge stands by Bolt criticism

24/08/2008 6:36 PM

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge is standing by his criticism of sprint sensation Usain Bolt, saying he was only offering him 'fatherly advice'.

Rogge repeated his comments that the Jamaican sprinter, who broke three world records in Beijing while winning his three golds, should show more respect to his opponents.

The IOC president has been widely criticised himself for his remarks but refused to back down.

Rogge told a news conference in Beijing: "The Bolt issue I take with a big smile. I gave him what I believe to be fatherly advice."

"I stand by what I said. He was the icon of the Games together with Michael Phelps and I have great respect for his abilities."

"But I repeat he should show more respect for his opponents. But he is a young man of 22 and he has time to mature."
