Aussies through to BMX semis

Aussies through to BMX semis

20/08/2008 4:10 PM

Aussies Jared Graves and Kamakazi have qualified for the semi-finals of the Men's BMX competition in Beijing.

Graves dominated Heat 4 of the quarter-finals and came out on top by winning the first run (38.067 seconds), coming second in run two (36.496) and claiming the third run (36.076).

In fact Graves was the second best-performed rider of the 32 competitors in the quarters behind American Mike Day who won all three of his runs in Heat 1.

Meanwhile, Kamakazi scraped into the semis by taking the fourth and final qualifying position from Heat 3 of the quarter-finals.

The man who changed his name via deed poll looked on shaky ground after he finished seventh in the first run with a time of 42.377 but he roared home to finish third in the final two runs with times of 36.785 and 38.463 respectively to edge out fifth-placed Colombian Augusto Castro by the slimmest of margins.

Both Graves and Kamakazi will be competing in Heat 2 of the semis on Thursday.

However, the third Australian in the field, Luke Madill, failed to get past the quarter-finals as he finished seventh overall in Heat 4.

Earlier, Graves qualified for the fourth heat of the quarter-finals after he finished 11th fastest in the Men's Seeding Phase after failing to finish the second run.

Graves' first run of 36.372 had him in sixth position initially but his failure to finish the second run saw him slip down to 11th overall.

Madill joined Graves in Heat 4 as his second Seeding Phase run of 36.795 was the 22nd best time of the 32-man field.

Kamakazi (36.492) competed in Heat 3 of the quarter-finals as he produced the 15th quickest time of the Seeding Phase.

And Australian Nicole Callisto qualified for Heat 2 of the semi-finals of the Women's competition after finishing sixth fastest at the completion of both runs in the Seeding Phase.

Despite recording a time of 37.717 seconds in the second run, which was faster than her first-run time of 38.260, Callisto was bumped from fifth fastest after run one to sixth after run two.

Castillo will be joined by countrywoman Tanya Bailey in Heat 2 of the semi-finals after she recorded the 10th best time (38.285) in her second run.
