It says plenty about Simon Wiggins' profile that Wednesday's media conference to acknowledge his 100th AFL match was the first he's ever had to front.
And it says something about those 100 games that when asked at the media conference to explain what position he plays, Wiggins was lost for words.
After a moment's reflection he described himself as 'a bit of a parts player' who's probably filled every role on the field, at one time or another, except the ruck.
Simon Wiggins is not the most talented footballer on Carlton's list and will never be regarded as one of the all-time greats of the club.
But there's no more popular player among his team-mates or more wholehearted performer come game day.
"It's something I've always wanted," Wiggins said of his 100-game milestone which comes up against the Western Bulldogs at Telstra Dome on Sunday.
"The first day I stepped into the club and saw all the names on the lockers and on my locker (No.34) was Ian Robertson, Alex Marcou and Ron De Iulio and I wanted to be alongside them."
"I've never really been able to look too far ahead with my career, I've just looked forward to the week after that, and eventually I've got here so I'm really proud."
Wiggins was one of seven players drafted (from the Tassie Mariners Under-18s with pick No.15) by the Blues in 2000, and he's the only one left.
After some difficult times under Denis Pagan, the 25-year-old is relishing being a part of the rebuilding process at Princes Park.
"Obviously the four, five years leading into this year were that difficult - I didn't know what it was like to saddle-up for a game of football thinking that we were a really good chance of winning," he said.
"You obviously get a bit down and it’s not as much fun as you'd hoped, but this year every game we're going into, I'm thinking we're a real chance, we can knock this team off, we can knock any team off."
"It's really exciting and I'm just happy to be a part of that."
Coach Brett Ratten said Wiggins fought through some hard times and chronic hamstring problems earlier in his career to win the respect of his peers.
"He's respected around the group for the way he goes about things, how hard he is on the ground, how hard he trains and he's just a down to earth good bloke," said Ratten.
"He comes to the club with a smile on his face … and the players around the place love him - just a fantastic good bloke."
"If you go to war with 'Wiggo' you know he's there fighting for you every step of the way and that's what I love about him and I think the players love that too."
Having fought so hard to get this far, there are no more milestones on Wiggins' horizon.
But if he should make it to 150 or 200, he will have taken persistence to a new level.
"I'm out of contract at the end of the year and I'm not sure what's going to happen there," he said.
"I've got five, six weeks to just keep putting my name up there and hopefully I will be at the football club for as long as I can."
"This year's meant so much to how we've been really competitive and playing some good footy."
"Obviously I want to play for as long as I can but this year has meant a lot to me in that regard."
