Selection dilemma for Bomber

Selection dilemma for Bomber

30/08/2008 8:22 PM

Geelong coach Mark Thompson faces a major dilemma at the selection table prior to his side's first final next week.

Andrew Mackie was a late exclusion for Geelong's 99-point demolition of West Coast on Saturday afternoon, but the 24-year-old is certain to return to the senior side next week.

Although Mackie's selection for next week is a given, Thompson has at least four tough decisions to make before the Cats' finals campaign kicks off.

Max Rooke has served his one-match suspension for a late hit on North Melbourne's Sam Power last week, while James Kelly has almost recovered from a quad injury and David Wojcinski impressed in the Cats VFL side on Saturday.

"You would assume Mackie would come back in and Kelly if he was right," a frank Thompson said after the win.

"Wojcinski played about 75 percent of the game (in the VFL), had 33 possessions and he has pulled up pretty well so it is going to be a tough selection."

The only bad news to come out of the Cats easy victory was the report to creative small forward Mathew Stokes and Thompson may be forced to make one compulsory change if the 23-year-old is suspended during the week.

But rather than dwell on Stokes' possible suspension, Thompson was quick to highlight all the positives to come out of the club's 13th consecutive victory this season.

"I thought all the guys on the fringe played really well today and that was the big challenge for them," Thompson said.

"Shannon Byrnes, (Harry) Taylor, (Brent) Prismall, (Travis) Varcoe, (Ryan) Gamble and all of those guys that people would presume to be first out played fantastic games and that is all they can do."

With a bevy of talent at his disposal, the Cats are rated as short priced favourites to win a second consecutive premiership this season regardless of which opponent they play.

Adelaide is Geelong's most likely opponent in the first week of the finals, but St Kilda can snatch fourth spot on the ladder on Sunday by defeating Essendon and making up enough percentage to pass the Crows.

And while Thompson doesn't care which team his side faces next week, he did have a warning for any foe the Cats may play this finals series.

"Our boys are more confident this year," Thompson said.

"At the same stage last year we were probably a bit anxious and didn't know what to expect. And that has got to be a good thing."
