Motlop looking to step up

Port Adelaide forward Daniel Motlop says he'll be looking to improve his leadership skills after signing a three-year deal with the Power this week.

Motlop, who kicked 57 goals from 21 games in 2008, said he was pleased he'd be continuing his career at Alberton.

"Good to get signed up and get settled I guess. You don't want to be playing through the year thinking about contracts and that sort of stuff so it was good to get it out the way," he said.

"They (Port) got me over here and I didn't want to go anywhere else, and they knew that, so it's was good to sign up."

"Obviously my first year wasn't that good and the last two have been a bit better. The next three years I'm going to concentrate on footy and repay the club."

Part of that focus will go into becoming a mentor for some of the Power's younger players. At 26 years of age, Motlop admits its time to add more to his game.

"I'll try and get into the leadership group next year and push towards that. I'm one of the oldest there now so I've got to step up with that," he said.

"I suppose lead the way with the young boys and that sort of stuff. At times I give away free kicks and I suppose that's where I've got to do better - if the young boys see me do that then it's a good example."

"When I first came to the club I stuffed up a little bit, didn't set a good example and the last two years I've been pretty good and I suppose now it's time to chill out."

Motlop is the third Power forward to sign with captain Warren Tredrea stitching up a one-year deal while Brett Ebert is also committed to the club until 2011.

In a disappointing season, the former Kangaroo's efforts in the forward 50 metres were a highlight for the club.

His check-side dribble kick against Fremantle in Round 10 was a contender for goal of year but he was beaten for the honour by Leon Davis' tackle, evasion and major for the Magpies also against the Dockers.

Motlop has been a contender for the award before and was flippant about missing out again.

"Hopefully next year I can win on consistency, see what happens," he said smirking.

"He (Davis) is a good mate of mine so I might have to break a few tackles next time to beat him."

The 97-game player will have a chance to put his foot skills to the test during the off-season after being selected for the International Rules series later this month.

Team-mates Shaun Burgoyne and David Rodan are also part of the squad.

Motlop was looking forward to playing against Ireland but admitted he hadn't mastered the round ball yet.

"Not real good at it but we'll see what happens," he said.
