In a remarkable final quarter, Carlton has stormed home to beat Brisbane by six points at the Gabba on Saturday night to keep its extremely slim finals hopes alive.
Carlton dominated the majority of the first half but Brisbane hit back with a nine-goal to one third quarter to lead by 32 points, before Nick Stevens and Chris Judd helped the Blues put on a massive final term.
Judd and Stevens combined for 24 possessions in the last quarter alone as Carlton kicked six goals to nil to win 18.7 (115) to 16.13 (109).
Both teams now need St Kilda to lose to Adelaide and Essendon in its last two games, while they need to win themselves in the final round to be any chance at all of sneaking into the eight.
While Judd and Stevens lifted in the last quarter, they were terrific all night with the skipper Judd finishing with 33 disposals and his vice captain Stevens 35 and a goal.
They received terrific support from Marc Murphy who had 27 and two goals, as Heath Scotland, Bryce Gibbs and Shaun Grigg also had 21 touches each.
While Daniel Bradshaw had a night out at one end, Brendan Fevola didn't at the other for Carlton. Joel Patfull did a terrific job on him and Fevola managed just two goals to take his tally to 92 for the season with just next week's game against Hawthorn to come.
While Carlton has been criticised for not having other options aside from Fevola, they did against the Lions with Cameron Cloke booting four goals and Ryan Houlihan and Brad Fisher kicking three apiece.
Jordan Russell also did a terrific tagging job keeping Brisbane's Travis Johnstone to just eight possessions.
In his 200th game, Bradshaw was terrific with six goals and his forward mate Jonathan Brown added four but, after a blistering third quarter, the Lions ran out of gas.
Bradd Dalziell once again led the way for the hosts with 32 possessions, with Jared Brennan continuing his good form with 24 and Simon Black 23.
It was an incredible see-sawing contest all night. With Cloke and Houlihan on fire in the first quarter up forward, the Blues led by 22 points at quarter time.
Brisbane got two quick ones in the second term to close the gap and Carlton didn't score until after 11 minutes, but when they did, Brad Fisher kicked two goals in 60 seconds to see the Blues hold an 18-point lead at half time.
Three quick goals to Bradshaw for Brisbane early in the third quarter, followed by good running goals from Anthony Corrie and Rhan Hooper saw the Lions lead for the first time.
Bradshaw then nailed his sixth goal after a dubious free kick in from a boundary throw-in in the Lions' forward pocket, followed by two more to Brown and one from Rischitelli that saw the home side lead by more than five goals.
Carlton managed the first two goals of the final term through Fevola and Cloke, both from free kicks, before Jarrad Waite made the most of being moved forward and off Brown to kick truly and bring the Blues within 14. It was then just eight after Murphy kicked truly and two when Cloke booted his fourth.
Irish debutant Pearce Hanley then gave away a free kick in front of goal which Waite made the most of
