Zimbabwe aim to wrap up series

Sikandar Raza

Brendan Taylor's side are 2-0 up in the four-match series, having followed up a six-wicket win in the opening match on Friday with a resounding eight-wicket success at Queens Sports Club two days later.

Zimbabwe had been absent from ODI cricket for over 10 months prior to this series, but they have showed no signs of rustiness.

Sikandar Raza stole the show on Sunday, scoring his maiden century for Zimbabwe and also taking two wickets as Afghanistan's total of 256-7 proved to be insufficient.

Raza made a sublime 141 from only 133 balls, clearing the ropes seven times and hitting 11 boundaries, as the hosts got home with 39 balls to spare.

The 28-year-old also went down in the record books as he and Hamilton Masakadza produced Zimbabwe's first double century stand for the first wicket, putting on 224 before Masakadza went for 93.

Masakadza was moved up the order as the selectors dropped Vusimuzi Sibanda and that proved to be a masterstroke.

Raza was unsurprisingly named man of the match for his exploits, but it was not all doom and gloom for the tourists as Usman Ghani made a fine century.

The teenager opener had ensured his side posted a competitive total by scoring 118 in only his fourth ODI innings.

Ghani, 17, had already made two half-centuries in his fledgling ODI career so far and his skipper, Mohammad Nabi, will be hoping for more of the same on Tuesday.

Afghanistan have no margin for error going into the third game of the series and they will need more batsmen to chip in if they are to avoid a series whitewash, as Gulbadin Naib was the next highest scorer with an unbeaten 23 at the weekend.
