England all-rounder Chris Woakes has seen his comeback delayed after he suffered a meniscal tear in his left knee while undergoing rehabilitation for a foot injury.

Woakes was originally sidelined prior to his country's final World Cup group game, having been diagnosed with a stress reaction in the third metatarsal of his left foot.

He reported good progress in his recovery last week, but is now set to be unavailable until the end of May - meaning he is set to miss England's home Test series against New Zealand.

A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) read: "The ECB medical team confirms that England and Warwickshire bowler Chris Woakes underwent uncomplicated keyhole surgery on his left knee for a meniscal tear earlier today.

"The injury occurred while undergoing rehab for his foot injury.

"His rehab is likely to take a further four to six weeks."

Woakes, 26, has represented his country in four Tests, with the bulk of his international outings to date coming in limited-overs cricket.
