West Indies big guns arrive after difficult preparation

The tourists begin a five-match ODI series at Kochi's Nehru Stadium on Wednesday before a solitary Twenty20 international and three Tests - a schedule they must undertake without star limited-overs spinner Sunil Narine.

The off-break bowler was suspended from taking part in Kolkata Knight Riders' eight-wicket defeat in the Champions League T20 final on Saturday after being reported for a suspect action twice during the tournament.

Although the ban only relates to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)-affiliated tournament such as the Champions League and the Indian Premier League, and does not apply to international matches, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) on Friday elected to remove the 26-year-old from their travelling party due to the scrutiny he was likely to endure.

Slow-left-armer Sulieman Benn has been added to the squad in Narine's absence - three-and-a-half years on from his previous ODI appearance against the same opponents in Chennai.

Captain Dwayne Bravo and fellow all-rounders Dwayne Smith and Andre Russell bolster numbers further having missed the back-to-back warm-up defeats to India A because of their participation in the latter stages of the Champions League.

Sunday's 16-run loss to India's second string was not without positives for West Indies as seam trio Ravi Rampaul, Jerome Taylor and Kemar Roach impressed in reducing the hosts from 184 for two to 282 all out.

Wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin struck a run-a-ball 102 and Jason Holder followed up his 1-44 with the ball by bringing up a fifty alongside Darren Sammy, although collapses at either end of the innings mean the Windies short.

While West Indies major spin change has been dictated by circumstance, India have allowed themselves the luxury of resting off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Teenage left-arm chinaman protege Kuldeep Yadav has earned a call-up following an impressive Champions League campaign alongside Narine for the Knight Riders, while leg-spinner Karn Sharma misses out at the expense of Amit Mishra.

Wicketkeeper-batsmen Sanju Samson, all-rounder Stuart Binny and pace bowler Dhawal Kulkarni miss out from the squad that enjoyed ODI success in England earlier this year, but much of the pre-match focus rests on Kuldeep.

The 19-year-old's senior experience comprises of eight T20 outings, without a single List A appearance to his name - a remarkable rise from taking part in this year's Under-19 World Cup and missing out on Ranji Trophy selection for his state side Uttar Pradesh.

"Today is the day when my parents have been rewarded for the amount of sacrifices they made to make me a cricketer," Kuldeep told PTI.

"I was disheartened and completely broken when the UP management didn't find me good enough to play Ranji Trophy.

"My parents and childhood coach consoled me a lot at that time. I started working harder and today, I am in the Indian team."
