Warner, Pattinson receive ODI recalls

David Warner

The fiery opener, who has averaged 70.14 runs so far to help Australia build a 4-0 lead over England, is one of four players recalled to the side to take on the visitors in the first three games of the five-match series.

Captain Michael Clarke, James Pattinson and Shaun Marsh are also included in what is a full-strength squad.

Clarke returns to the side after missing the tour of India in October due to a back injury while Pattinson will now push his case for selection on the upcoming tour of South Africa in the national side instead of the Melbourne Renegades.

Marsh's call-up comes off the back of a superb Ryobi Cup season for Western Australia which saw him average an impressive 76 runs in just four games.

Warner's selection comes at the expense of Phil Hughes, just one day after Tasmania's Alex Doolan was chosen ahead of him for the final Ashes Test in Sydney.

Along with Hughes, there is no place for batsmen Adam Voges and Callum Ferguson and all-rounder Moises Henriques, who all failed to impress enough to justify another call-up.

In what will come as little consolation, national selector John Inverarity said Voges was 'particularly unlucky (to miss out) as his ODI performances over the past year have been very good'.

"Michael Clarke, Shaun Marsh and James Pattinson have been included after being unavailable through injury for the series against India in October. Phillip Hughes, Adam Voges, Moises Henriques and Callum Ferguson are unlucky to lose their places from the India ODI squad as they have all been in good form," Inverarity said.

"Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh are exciting prospects at the top of the order with the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup only 14 months away. Michael Clarke and Darren Lehmann will be looking for consistent performances from these players and the other batsmen who have the potential to impose themselves strongly on matches."

Inverarity also confirmed Pattinson's inclusion gives him an opportunity to leave an impression on the selection panel with the South Africa series just around the corner.

"James Pattinson has worked hard to get back to full fitness and will be looking to regain his best form. His performances will provide a guide to the NSP when it selects the team for the Test tour to South Africa in February and March," he said.

The ODI series against England will commence on January 12 at the MCG.
