Voges: WA on right track

Acting Western Australian captain Adam Voges says he's confident his side is on the right track after an inconsistent start to the season.

The Warriors have showed signs of improvement at times, after a six-year stretch without winning a trophy, during which time they've made just one final, but have been let down by their lack of reliability in both the Sheffield Shield and Ryobi One-Day Cup.

But after WA came back to steal an unlikely five-wicket victory in the one-day competition against Queensland, which put them just one point outside the top two, Voges said he was confident his team was heading in the right direction.

Voges said his team's upcoming road-trip, which sees them play Queensland and Tasmania in both forms before Christmas, would be telling for their final chances.

"It's the start of a massive road trip for us, it will probably define our season in both competitions, so to take a winning feeling over there is great," he said.

"It was going to be real tough if we didn't get up tonight. We're by no means assured of anything yet, but at 3-3 we're in the mix while at 2-4 we would've been struggling."

"It's been a pretty tough week (after losing to New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield) and we were staring down the barrel at half way, but we dragged it back really well with the ball."

The Warriors trailed by 33 runs after their first innings and were set 160 to win off 25 overs, with just six wickets in hand, but Voges (85 not out) and debutant Tom Beaton (71 off 73 balls) lead them to victory.Voges said Beaton's performance was particularly pleasing.

"Talk about playing without fear, he was awesome. To strike the ball as cleanly as he did in his first game was terrific," he said.

"He's been smashing the door down all year, so he deserved his opportunity and he didn't let anyone down tonight."

Beaton, who was dropped early in his innings, said it was a great thrill to have done so well in his WA debut.

"I was definitely nervous, but it settled pretty quickly, which was handy. It helped to have (Voges) with me," he said.

"I'm confident of keeping my spot, I've just got to keep putting the performances on the board and working hard in training."
