Fielding at third slip, Root took the magnificent catch to claim the wicket of Josh Hazlewood off the bowling of Ben Stokes, to advance England’s bid to claim the third Test inside three days.
The English bowled out Australia for the second time in the first session of day three for 281, and left themselves 121 runs to get in over a day and a half.
Should they manage to accumulate the runs, they will take a 2-1 lead in the series heading towards Trent Bridge for the fourth test.
