Troubled Pakistan out to square series

With their Cricket World Cup preparations having proved less than ideal so far, Pakistan aim to turn their fortunes around in their second one-day international against New Zealand on Tuesday.

New Zealand won the first instalment of the two-match series on Saturday, cruising to a seven-wicket success having bowled the tourists out for 210.

The pace trio of Kyle Mills, Trent Boult and Adam Milne were all impressive in that meeting in Wellington, and they will look to cause havoc among Pakistan's top order once again when the two sides clash in Napier.

Pakistan have been on a torrid run of late in 50-over matches, having lost twice to a New Zealand Board President's XI before their defeat in Wellington.

Prior to that, they were beaten 3-2 by the Black Caps in the United Arab Emirates back in December, and recent preparations have been overshadowed by reported contract disputes between the players and the Pakistan Cricket Board.

With that issue seemingly now resolved, attentions can return to on-field matters as Pakistan attempt to find some form with their World Cup opener against fierce rivals and defending champions India just two weeks away.

Legendary all-rounder Wasim Akram has questioned the team's preparation for the tournament.

He told The Nation: "When you look at India and how they are still struggling despite being in Australia for the past two months and having played a lot of matches, it does raise concerns whether Pakistan have enough time to go well prepared into the World Cup.

"It takes time to adjust to the pitches and conditions in both countries and I have toured those nations many times in the past.

"I just think a few warm-up games and two ODIs against New Zealand is not the proper preparation for such a mega event.

"We should have played a full ODI series in New Zealand and had some more games in Australia before the World Cup."

New Zealand, by contrast, come into the game in fine form and are being widely tipped as strong contenders to lift the World Cup, which they will co-host alongside Australia.

The aforementioned trio of Mills, Boult and Milne are a dangerous combination, and Brendon McCullum's side are enjoying the momentum created by defeating Sri Lanka 4-2 in their recent seven-match series.
