Trott announces England retirement

England batsman Jonathan Trott has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect.

The 34-year-old endured a miserable return to the international stage during the drawn Test series against West Indies and it was announced on Monday that his England career has come to an end.

He said: "This was a tough decision to make but I don't feel my game is at the level you need to be at to play for England. I was honoured to be given the opportunity to come back and play international cricket again and I'm disappointed it didn't work out.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me and given me the chance to represent England and to thank supporters for all their backing over the years. I also want to wish the lads all the very best for what will be an incredibly exciting summer.

"I've had incredible highs and some real lows in an England shirt but wouldn't change a thing. I look forward to continuing my career at Warwickshire and hopefully helping us win more silverware."

Trott's England future looked to be in doubt when he returned early from the Ashes tour of Australia in November 2013 due to a stress-related illness.

He recovered to rediscover his form for Warwickshire and was selected for the tour of the Caribbean after impressing when captaining England Lions in South Africa.

He was selected to open the batting in all three Tests against the Windies, but managed only 74 runs from six innings - including three ducks.

The South Africa-born right hander played 52 Tests, scoring 3835 runs at an average of 44.08 and averaged an impressive 51.25 from 68 one-day international appearances. Trott also featured in seven Twenty20 internationals.
