Strauss hails teamwork

Captain Andrew Strauss is keeping a lid on England's convincing win in the second Test despite thrashing Australia with bat and ball.

Strauss said England would enjoy and savour the win but warned it would be foolish pat each other on the back and allow Australia to fight their way into the series with three Tests remaining.

The England opener acknowledged his side could retain the Urn before Christmas with a win in Perth but said he is expecting a fight from the Aussies and the visitors would need to be prepared for a scrap in the upcoming matches.

"We're very pleased with what we've done this week on the back of the last couple of days in Brisbane," Strauss said.

"We know the game of cricket and we know that it has a horrible way of biting you if you start patting yourself on the back too much. It's important we don't let Australia back in the series. We need to enjoy this and savour it because it was a special victory for us."

"We've got the opportunity to do it (before Christmas) but we won't do it unless we play as well as we've done this week. We've got to be prepared for a scrap in these last two Test matches and if we're prepared for it and prepared to dig pretty deep as the series goes then we're in a good position."

Strauss hailed a brilliant team performance highlighted by individual efforts including man-of-the-match Kevin Pietersen's career-best knock of 227 and Alastair Cook's 148.

The skipper also praised seamer James Anderson for claiming 4-51 in the first innings and spinner Graeme Swann, who ripped through the Aussies with 5-91 in the second.

Strauss urged England to continue their form and not take their foot off the pedal ahead of the clash at the WACA.

"What we said at the start of the series is the only way we would win the Ashes is if eleven guys are performing and you can't rely on one or two."

"We're in a good position now because a lot of our batters are in good form, our bowlers are bowling well but we need to make sure we don't take our foot off the pedal. We know Australia are going to come back at us hard and we know if we give them any sort of way back into the series they'll take it."

Double-ton hero Pietersen also echoed the sentiments of his captain before expressing his delight over England's 'incredible' victory.

"The best feeling is walking into the dressing rooms having won this Test match," Pietersen said.

"I think individual performances obviously add to a team victory and I think the team victory today is incredible. It's the best feeling no matter who takes the wickets, who makes the runs."

"A victory in Australia - I haven't had one, Straussy hasn't had one - in Test match cricket and it's a great feeling. We're going to enjoy it but we're not going to get complacent. Like Straussy said as soon as we get complacent it comes back to bite you."
