Stoneman: Stokes back where he belongs

Ben Stokes is back where he belongs after the England all-rounder impressed with the bat in the first Test with the West Indies, according to Durham team-mate Mark Stoneman.

Stokes was recalled to the Test side for the tour of the Caribbean for the first time since being dropped after the second Test with India last year.

His omission from the remainder of the series win over India followed a rollercoaster spell in which Stokes served as the lone bright spot during England's Ashes whitewash at the hands of Australia before fracturing his hand by punching a locker during a limited overs tour of the West Indies.

That injury forced Stokes to miss last year's World Twenty20 tournament and he also left out of the England squad for the recent World Cup.

Although England could only draw last week's first Test, New Zealand-born Stokes scored 79 in his first innings before going for 35 in the second and Stoneman believes the 23-year-old is very much at home on the international stage.

Top-order batsman Stoneman told Perform: "He's [Stokes] had a strange 18 months. He had some success in the Ashes and then he's injured in the Caribbean and missed out on some cricket on the back of that.

"He put in some fantastic performances in the semi and the final in the one-dayers for us last year. He's a fantastic cricketer and an outstanding lad so it's great to see him back where he belongs.

"He's definitely an international class cricketer. To see him get back into the team and performing well is great for him.

England's frustrated bowling attack could only take six Windies wickets in the second innings.

However, they do have options in reserve ahead of the second Test, one of which is Durham paceman Mark Wood.

Asked about Wood, Stoneman added: "Injuries have kept him off the park more than he would have wanted and we would have liked at Durham but when he has played he's certainly made an impact.

"He's a guy capable of taking five-wicket hauls and bowling devastating spells with the new ball or the old ball.

"He's got all the attributes and hopefully if he gets a chance he'll be able to perform well."
