Steve Smith wins first Allan Border Medal

Steve Smith
On what was a big night for the 25-year-old, Smith also took home both the Test player of the year and ODI player of the year awards as he completed a clean sweep of the three major prizes on offer.

Smith, who stepped into the captaincy void left by the injured Michael Clarke, polled 243 votes for the medal, easily beating David Warner who had 175. Mitchell Johnson was third in the voting, tallying 126.

The batsman also won Test player of the year just ahead of Warner while he was able to hold off Aaron Finch to claim the ODI award.

The trio of awards caps off a career-defining year for Smith, who announced himself as one of the best middle-order batsman in the world. He ended the year as Australia's highest run-scorer in Tests with 1212 runs, just three ahead of Warner.

Smith finished the voting period with two ODI centuries and five Test hundreds, including one in every game in the recently completed home Test series against Pakistan where he finished with 769 runs at an average of 128.16.

That was a series charged with emotion after the death of Phillip Hughes, so it was fitting that Abbott took home the prestigious Bradman award.

The 22-year-old fast bowler, who made his ODI and T20 debuts in 2014, received the support from the Australian cricketing community after the Hughes tragedy and was humbled by the award.

"I am thankful for the support of the Australian cricket family and wider community, as well as my own family, close friends and teammates, and especially my girlfriend Brier," Abbott said in a pre-recorded message from Canberra, where he was preparing to play for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League final against the Perth Scorchers on Wednesday night.

"I feel privileged to receive such an award, especially after a couple of good seasons in a row on the field and some tough off seasons pushing myself to continually improve.

"I feel that this is a reward for a lot of good work and finally putting some consistent good performances together.

Abbott claimed the award after polling 42 votes, winning ahead of promising fast bowler Gurinder Sandhu, while Glenn Maxwell was named T20 player of the year.
