Sri Lanka sports minister urges Sangakkara to rethink retirement

Sri Lanka's sports minister has urged retiring batsman Kumar Sangakkara to play on for another year.

Sangakkara made his 404th and final one-day international appearance in Sri Lanka's Cricket World Cup quarter-final defeat to South Africa last month.

Earlier in the tournament, he had made history by becoming the first man to score four successive centuries in ODIs as he bowed out in a rich vein of form.

Sangakkara plans to retire from Test matches later this year, but sports minister Navin Dissanayake has implored him to reconsider his decision after hiring an interim management team to "clean up" the cricket board.

"As sports minister, I humbly appeal to Kumar to reconsider and play for the country for at least one more year," he said.

"I spoke with him in New Zealand during the World Cup.

"He was very disappointed and unhappy [with the administration] and now that there is a change, I think there is a possibility that he will change his mind."
