Sri Lanka on way to win

With a brutal burst of 4-6, Sri Lanka have all but sealed victory in their opening tour match against Queensland at the Gabba, who after a promising start fell away to 6-129 at the 25-over mark.

Dhammika Prasad was the chief destroyer for the visitors, taking 3-27 from seven overs, including the key wickets of Ryan Broad and Lee Carseldine.

The Bulls were able to rebuild for at time through Chris Lynn and Lee Carseldine, who put on 57 at more than a run a ball before Lynn was out top-edging a hook shot.

Queensland opener Chris Simpson played out a maiden from Nuwan Kulasekara in the first over, but the Bulls were underway in the second with Ryan Broad stroking a textbook off-drive for four.

The Bulls were moving along nicely with Simpson driving for boundaries, but the Sri Lankans were bowling well and in the fifth over Kulasekara had Broad beaten all ends up with two consecutive deliveries - an off-cutter that whizzed over the stumps and one that went away that had the opener flashing loosely outside the off-stump.

After nine overs Queensland were motoring along well, moving to 0-45 with Simpson in particular looking in a destructive mood, but in the 10th the first wicket fell when Broad hung his bat out to dry and was caught behind off the bowling of Prasad.

Things turned from bad to worse for the Bulls when Simpson was dismissed in the very next over, out LBW to Kulasekara playing across the line.

With the loss of two quick wickets, momentum had truly swung in the favour of the Sri Lankans and as both new batsmen - Carseldine and Lynn - took time to adjust.

The Bulls crept along with the odd single for a couple of overs and then in the 14th over Prasad all but sealed the result, having Carseldine chopping on with a reckless back-foot slash and then Nathan Reardon lasted just two balls before he too was trudging back.

Craig Philipson didn't want to go down as passively as the men before him, and on the final ball of the over he drove strongly for three - the first scoring shot for worth more than a single since the first ball of the eighth over.

Thisara Perera came on as first change from the Stanley Street end, and in his first two overs he went for 16, with Philipson helping himself to a pair of boundaries in each, three of which came from through the vacant gully region from well played late cuts.

Despite losing 4-6, the Bulls pair were playing without fear, and when Lynn dumped a Fernando half-volley over the rope for six the subdued Queensland crowd came to life with a 'Queenslander' chant.

The 100 came up in the 21st over with Lynn driving through the covers for four, and then the 20-year-old had a slice of luck, taking four from a French cut to bring up the 50 partnership.

But having spent one life, Lynn was out of chances and when Fernando dug in a good bouncer he top edged his hook shot and Sangakkara ran back almost to the boundary to take the catch.

Next man in Chris Hartley stuck around for just five balls scoring two runs before he became another soft dismissal, spooning a slower ball gently to mid-on.
