Sri Lanka off to winning start

Sri Lanka have had the ideal start to their Australian tour, putting on polished displays with both bat and ball to trounce Queensland by a whopping 112 runs in their 50-over day-nighter at the Gabba.

After captain Kumar Sangakkara posted a brilliant 110 earlier in the day to steer the visitors to an imposing 301-run total, the bowling side delivered, ripping through the Queensland batting side for the cost of just 189 runs.

Dilhara Fernando had four wickets, and with the exception of Thisara Perera all of the Sri Lankan bowlers looked in good touch.

After Chris Simpson and Ryan Broad took Queensland to 45 without loss from nine overs, Queensland fell to pieces, losing 4-6, before Chris Lynn and Craig Philipson came together with a 57 run partnership at more than a run a ball.

But when Lynn was out hooking, and then Chris Hartley and Jason Floros followed him soon after, the night was effectively over for the Bulls.

Philipson was the best of the Queensland batsmen by a country mile, and his unbeaten 59 included 12 boundaries.

After the Bulls had limped to 6-129 at the half-way point of their allotted 50 overs, Floros became the second consecutive wicket to fall to a Fernando delivery and Upul Tharanga catch.

Nathan Rimmington showed a greater resilience than many of his top-order predecessors, but after registering nine scrappy runs he was out LBW to Jeevan Mendis, hit low on the pad and only half a stride forward.

Philipson-s solo effort was brought to a halt when he was out caught at mid-on off the bowling of Mendis after he failed to get the required elevation to clear the infield.

After 35 overs Sangakkara brought Prasad back on to clean up the tail, but the plan backfired with his over - which included Ben Laughlin being caught off a free swing - cost 17 runs.

Fernando was brought back at the other end and he needed just one ball to finish the job, yorking Chris Swan with minimal fuss.
