South Africa on verge of historic series win

Hashim Amla's side are on the brink of becoming the first South Africa team since 1993 to return victorious from Sri Lanka, but they must deliver the goods when the meeting in Colombo begins on Thursday.

A 153-run win in Galle paved the way for a momentous series triumph and AB de Villiers insists the squad are fully focused on making history with another disciplined display.

"It's not rocket science, there is a huge Test coming up," said De Villiers. "We would love to win the series 2-0, winning both the ODI's and Tests would be special for us as a team.

"It will be important for us to lay the foundation again on Thursday like we did in the first Test in Galle.

"I thought we started really well and it gave us the freedom to express our talent over the five days."

Quinton de Kock is expected to keep the gloves for the tourists as De Villiers continues his recovery from a hamstring injury, while their bowling attack will be braced for another tough challenge in sweltering conditions.

Dale Steyn (9-99) and Morne Morkel (7-78) shone in Galle, but Vernon Philander's charge of ball tampering marred the bowling unit's performance.

Once again Sri Lanka will look to the experienced duo of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara to lead them to victory.

Galle is a happy hunting ground for both men, with Jayawardene scoring almost a quarter of his 11,506 runs at the ground, and Sangakkara averaging 79.96, while they shared a record 624-run partnership there against South Africa in 2006.

The hosts will, however, be without injured fast bowler Shaminda Eranga, and have made changes to their wicketkeeping options amid concerns over Dinesh Chandimal.

The 24-year-old has not reached double figures in his last three innings and youngster Niroshan Dickwella has replaced him in the squad for what will be his Test debut if selected.

Meanwhile, Eranga was ruled out after tearing the webbing between his thumb and index finger of his right hand while fielding on the opening day, and although he managed to finish the match he needs time to recover.

Dhammika Prasad and Chanaka Welegedara provide cover options within the squad, with the former hoping home ground advantage could help him earn a 14th Test cap.
