Warner was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for accusing the South Africans of ball-tampering during the second Test in Port Elizabeth.

And ahead of the decider in Cape Town, which starts on Saturday, Smith voiced his displeasure at the comments.

After suffering a heavy defeat in the first match at Centurion, South Africa responded strongly in the second Test, winning inside four days by 231 runs and Smith feels Warner has taken some of the shine off an impressive victory.

"He's becoming a little bit of a rent a quote," he said.

"I think the journalists across the board from what I've seen have been fair in the way they've assessed his quotes.

"My thoughts are pretty strong and I think I will end up saying something toward the end of the Test match, but at the moment my focus is on getting us prepared.

"As the coach (Russell Domingo) said earlier, it just adds to the motivation for us going into the game.

"I think it is just sad that it took the gloss of an extremely good win, an extremely impressive spell of fast bowling. So we are ready."

Smith himself has struggled in the opening two games of the series, with scores of 10, four, nine and 14 to leave him with an average of just 9.25.

Victory in the final Test at Cape Town would seal South Africa's first home series win against Australia since their readmission 20 years ago, and the 33-year-old is desperate to have more of an impact at the top of the order to help the cause.

"I haven't contributed in the way I'm used to contributing and the way I'd like to contribute," he said.

"I feel like I've prepared really well this week, my training's gone really well and I feel like I'm in a good space.

"As an opening batter, it's about getting through that initial period and getting yourself in."

Coach Domingo backed his captain, warning the tourists that the opener was due a big score.

"Graeme's record speaks for itself," he said.

"It's very seldom that he goes through the series without making a contribution, with the bat, because he makes a massive contribution as the leader."
