MORE: Australia close in on win at The Oval

Peter Siddle stressed that he still has plenty to offer Australia after impressing with the ball as the tourists close in on victory in the fifth and final Ashes Test.

Paceman Siddle was overlooked for the first four Tests and could only watch his team-mates relinquished the little urn, with England holding an unassailable 3-1 lead heading into this week's Test at The Oval.

Siddle somewhat surprisingly got the nod ahead of Pat Cummins when Josh Hazlewood was ruled out due to injury and the 30-year-old has caused the England batsmen plenty of problems.

He took 2-32 in the first innings as England were bowled out for 149 in the morning session on day three in reply to 481, then 1-14 from 16 overs after Michael Clarke enforced the follow-on for the first time.

England will resume on day four on 6-203, trailing by 129, and Siddle is determined to send another message to the selectors by helping to finish off the job and ensure the tourists end the series on a high note with rain forecast later after lunch on Sunday.

He told ABC Grandstand: "I'm only 30, Ryan Harris I think started about this stage and did well. There's plenty left there and I just need to take my chance and keep performing. Hopefully tomorrow morning I can get a couple more."

He added: "That's been the biggest enjoyment, being able to get out here and contribute.

"We're in a good position at the moment, it's been a long day for us but I think we got our rewards."

Nathan Lyon took 2-52 and Steve Smith dismissed Alastair Cook (85) late in the day as England were second best once again on day three.

Siddle added: "It was useful Nathan and Smithy using their skills with the spin to get a couple late in the day. I think tomorrow morning, new ball, that should help us out.

"Two days to get a few more wickets I think there will be enough overhead to get the job done."

When asked if he felt hard done by being left out, he said: "I think you always do when you're not playing, but I did everything I could.

"I didn't get many wickets in the tour matches, which would have helped, but all I could do was make sure I was ready when the opportunity came."
