Sean Abbott offered counselling

LIVE UPDATES: Updates and messages of support for Phil Hughes

The Australian Cricketers Association on Tuesday rushed three of its senior staff to Sydney to counsel players.

Particular attention is being paid to the mental state of New South Wales fast bowler Sean Abbott whose delivery struck the South Australia left-hander.

The 22-year-old immediately rushed to Hughes' side after the South Australian batsman collapsed face first onto the SCG pitch and was seen cradling Hughes' head.

While a flurry of support messages came from around the world, former greats such as Adam Gilchrist and Dean Jones were also sparing a thought on social media for Abbott.

ACA chief Alistair Nicholson stressed the welfare of players involved in the match, many of them friends of Hughes, was paramount.

"We were obviously shocked to learn of the seriousness of the incident involving Phil," said chief executive Alistair Nicholson.

"While we have faith that he's receiving the best available treatment, the situation will impact his family, friends, and those directly involved on the field. The ACA [Australian Cricketers' Association] is therefore working closely with CA [Cricketers Association] to arrange the appropriate counselling for those affected."
